Award-winning home features underfloor heating

Underfloor heating is a feature in many homes around the UK these days. One example of its use is in an award-winning residence in Scotland.

The abode, which is located near the Aberdeenshire village of Insch, features underfloor hearing throughout the downstairs accommodation and, according to its owner, the technology helps keep the property warm, the Aberdeen Press and Journal reports.

Architect Douglas Forrest and his wife Carol decided to transform one of the derelict buildings on the Wardhouse Estate after it was purchased by Acanthus Architects in 2000.

In the past, there were no luxuries such as electric showers and home lighting in the construction as is used to be a place for horses to sleep. However, after Aberdeenshire Council granted permission for work to start on the estate, it was not long before the former stables and carriage room was transformed into a modern and luxurious abode.

And, according to Mr Forrest, the underfloor heating and wood burning stove, which is situated in the snug, keep the home warm and cosy. He stated: "Even in the hardest, coldest winter you can wear a T-shirt in the house, it's very comfortable."

This is not the only innovative energy solution at the property. There is also a six kilowatt wind turbine, which was fitted as part of the project's sustainability criteria three-and-a-half years ago.

Commenting on this, Mr Forrest remarked: "The turbine has been absolutely brilliant. We've seen a significant reduction in the cost of our electricity, and the other thing is we now feel in tune with the wind and the elements. Every day you're conscious of whether it's a strong wind or a soft wind."

Even the local farmer has benefited, he claimed, as he looks at the turbine each day to see which way the wind is blowing.
